Alumni chapter... in Japan?

So, last summer I worked at the orientations for the new JETs when they first arrive in Japan, and I ran into about 10 Whitties. It got me thinking that there are all these alumni chapters, and there seem to be a fair number of Whitties in Japan, either on the JET programme or studying or working...

I contacted the alumni officer and got the contact info for the alumni that are listed in Japan. There are about 30 on the list, plus there are many more recent alumni who aren't on that list but I know they are in Japan. I was thinking about creating an alumni chapter for Japan. Does anyone have any thoughts about this? The only idea I came up with was maybe making a listserv on Yahoo groups, and any alumni and students who are currently living in Japan, have lived in Japan, are thinking about living in Japan, etc. could join. I know this country isn't that small, but it would be nice to have a little network, even if we don't actually all meet up for events.

Any other ideas about this?

As a former JET, I think that would be a GREAT idea. I have tried to get in touch with the Seattle AJET office and have had no luck at all. Anyone know how I can reach them? Ganbatte, neh!

ask, and ye shall receive:

Seattle JET Alumni Association (JETAA) - http://www.pnw.jetalumni.org/

So, I guess the next question is, what should the group be called? I'm hoping some clever inspiration will come to me, but so far it hasn't. Simple could be good, just call it WhittiesJapan. Any other ideas?

I'm not in Japan now, but I studied there with AKP. I know two whitties who are there right now, so if you do get this up and running I will definitely refer them to you. I think it sounds like a great idea! I'm not feeling creative right now, so I can't think of any better names. Sorry!

Friend of Whitman
Cool! What year were you on AKP? I will definitely keep this list posted about a new group/listserv.

In the meantime, please let the Whitties who are currently on AKP know that I'd love to get together with them for coffee or a meal or something, as I live in Kyoto City. My email is linguist_jess AT whitties.org. :-)

Lol, I totally understand. My tea of choice changes with daily, but I had ginger peach. Nummy! I was on AKP in 2003. Were you on it too, or did you do JET?

I just mailed the people I know in Japan. They are on lj:
chibiaimee (http://chibiaimee.livejournal.com/)
roler (http://roler.livejournal.com/)

Cheers!

I was the only person who lived in the Tek in 2000-2001 who didn't do AKP. One of few Tekkies who didn't actually study in Japan at all actually... I'm on JET (still) and I was here in 2003. Which means we probably met at least once, ne. Did you come to dinner at an Indian restaurant with a whole bunch of Whitties, including Kenta? I was there.

mmm, ginger peach...

Hey, indygodusk just gave me a heads up about this thread. I think that an Alumni Chapter in Japan would be a good idea...I'm studying in Tokyo right now, but I'd like to travel around the country more and would definitely be up for meeting more Whitties.

BTW, I'm pretty sure we know each other in real life, too. You're friends with Jen W., right? And you created your own major? I don't know if you remember me or not, but I used to go over to the Tek a lot when Sarah N. lived there...

Awesome. Where in Tokyo are you? I will be there in May for a few days of business meetings.

And yeah, I'm pretty sure we do know each other in real life. Of course I remember you. I was living in the Tek with Jen and Sarah N. I didn't realize you were back/still in Japan! I heard that you left Osaka...

Anyway, I will sit down at the computer next week and make a new Yahoo Group for all these Japan-connected Whitties. If you have any ideas for names, let me know! (^_^) And let me know if you're heading my way! (still in Kyoto)
